Short Eared Owl | Joel Walley Wildlife Photography
Wintering Short Eared Owl (Asio flammeus) hunting over the Burton marshes of the Dee Estuary, North West England. Unlike most owls, the Short Eared Owl can often be seen hunting in the day. Although more crepuscular than diurnal, in the winter the short days mean that these owls can be seen early in the afternoon as with this individual. Short Eared Owls breed in the uplands and are rarely seen in the spring and summer. Most of those encountered in the winter are migrants which fly in from the continent.
