Red Squirrel | Joel Walley Wildlife Photography
Cautious Squirrel. Since the introduction of the Grey Squirrel (sciurus carolinensis) from North America, the decline of the native British Red Squirrel (sciurus vulgaris) has been startling. Some reports suggest that the few last strongholds of the Red Squirrel will be lost in the next 20 years or so. This particular population in Formby, North West England, underwent a 80% decline after an outbreak of squirrel pox. The population has since largely recovered, but remains vulnerable.
