A Male Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) returns to the nest hole with a beak full of grubs. The loud calls of the adult birds are the first giveaway that a woodpecker is nearby and I often hear these birds while on woodland walks. The different sexes are easily distinguished by the presence of a red spot on the back of the males head, which the female birds lack.
