Mountain Hare, Isle of Mull | Joel Walley Wildlife Photography
Mountain Hare (Lepus timidus) appear far more rabbit like than the Brown Hare (Lepus europaeus) which is commonly found across the UK, largely due to their smaller ears. The population of Mountain Hares on Mull occur all over the island, however we encountered the highest number whilst walking the area around Fidden, where many were seen on the beach well below the usual altitude at which the species' is found. This is thought to be due to the lack of eagles in this area of the island and resultant reduced threat of predation.
