Little Grebe | Joel Walley Wildlife Photography
Grebe portrait. As the name suggests the Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) is the smallest European member of the grebe family. Also commonly known as the Dabchick, these charismatic little birds are a relatively familiar sight on British waterways, although they are rarely as approachable as this individual. Most views of this species involve seeing a small bird dive below the surface of the water only to resurface several metres away and continue its escape. Fortunately i was given a tip off of an excellent location in Derbyshire, with many great opportunities to observe and photograph this shy bird.
