European Otter, Isle of Mull | Joel Walley Wildlife Photography
European Otter (Lutra lutra), like many others on the Isle of Mull, was extremely confiding. This photograph was taken on the rocky shore of Loch Spelvie, where we saw several Otters hunting. This individual had come to land to eat a large crab which it had just caught. For much of the 20th century the European Otter suffered large declines due to pollution and subsequent loss of prey. However, better environmental protection has seen an increase in the population in the United Kingdom. This year brought fantastic news as Otters can now once again be found in every county in England.
