Common Scoter | Joel Walley Wildlife Photography
Female Common Scoter (Melanitta nigra) found on the North Coast of Loch Na Keal, Mull. A rare breeding bird in the UK, most are seen during the winter months when the population can reach over 50,000. The Common Scoter is a marine duck only coming inland to breed on small lochs in the summer. Although this is possibly not the most exciting photograph, this individual provided a rare opportunity to observe an animal which usually resides several miles offshore, at close range.
