Blue Tit Stare | Joel Walley Wildlife Photography
The Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) is one of Britain's most recognisable and charismatic species, common to many gardens. Although to our eyes the sexes may appear similar, under UV light the male Blue Tits head shines bright blue. This is important for sexual selection as birds can see wavelengths which are beyond our vision, and in laboratory tests females were shown to prefer males with the brightest crests.
